Legal English refers to English for law, or in other words, English for lawyers or others who work in the legal sector. We have two primary types of courses:

  • LLM or JD Preparation Course
  • Writing for Legal Professions

Our facilitators have credentials in law and technical writing. They are also proficient in English and Indonesian and familiar the language that impact legal education and the practice of law in Indonesia.

If you choose to engage in an individual course of study you will be given a list of readings on legal topics and asked to chose several to read and respond to. Your response will be reviewed and, if in some cases edited. Depending on the scope of the course you’ll have an option to choose one of the writing assignments to develop into an article or essay that may be be published or self-published. In addition, if you are preparing for an LLM we will also discuss comparative legal education and identify ways to ensure that your foreign legal background is an asset not a detriment when you go overseas for further legal education.

If you study Legal English courses as part of a training initiative sponsored by your law firm then the course will have a practical focus that is aligned with kind of work handled by the law firm and you may be able to use the actual legal documents you are currently working on to to satisfy the writing requirements. We may also focus on specific work processes or documents, such as how to organize a legal memo or draft a power of attorney.
