About the SAT

The SAT (originally the Scholastic Aptitude Test) is a popular international qualification offered four times a year at various locations throughout Indonesia. It has been around since 1926.

The SAT goes by various names, such as “New SAT” and “SAT I.” In each case the reference is to the “normal” SAT test commonly taken by high school students preparing for college.

However, the SAT Subject Tests are different. They are also less common. The SAT Subject Tests cover a wide range of subjects, from chemistry to Japanese. These qualifications are often accepted but rarely required by your target schools. If you are very strong in a particular area, this is a good way to demonstrate your knowledge and ability.

In 2016 the College Board introduced several major changes to the content and scoring of the SAT. The exam takes approximately four hours to complete, including the optional written essay.

The SAT has three sections, however one of them — the essay writing task — is scored separately. When someone says they got a perfect 1600 on the SAT that means they scored 800 on the verbal side of the test (reading + writing & language); and 800 on the math side.  The essay is technically optional, although most students opt in.
